Kincumber Festival, BBQ and Fundraiser

Avoca scouts we are having our major fundraiser tomorrow (Saturday 18th) and supporting the local community at the Kincumber Spring Festival. We will have a stand and BBQ being setup from 8am and operating all day from 9am-3pm. Scouts and parents, please support us, so we can support you! Fundraisers buy needed equipment, provide training for the youth members and adults, promote scouting and engender community spirit in our youth members. So please come down, see the festival, visit us, get involved, help out, send your friends and family along and buy a sausage or two!

Please wear your uniform neatly and fully if you can, so we function and appear as both a cohesive scout and organised youth group. Your assistance during or at any part of the day would certainly be appreciated. Have fun and be proud!

Gosford District Mud Bash

Avoca Beach Surf Scouts it's the Billy Cart Mud Bash this Sunday (12th Sep) at Kariong! A tough activity for sure over rough terrain competing against other groups for the prize, but I am sure the Avoca legends will be victorious. Koolang Observatory visit

For the Koolang observatory night this Saturday evening, 4th September, here are some more details below.

The A1 form is on our website in the calendar section also, it has all the details you need.

I understand this night goes ahead rain, hail or (moon) shine!
They do have other activities (observatory tour etc.) for cloudy nights.

The weather is expecting rain, but clearing Saturday night into Sunday, don’t panic, let’s just hope it clears early for us!

Astronomically if it does clear for Saturday evening then that would be the best circumstance as the rain pulls the dust out of the sky and the best nights of transparency and the darkest skies are always immediately following rain.

Family and friends welcome, if any of you scouts wish to bring a mate along you are more than welcome!

If you have not paid already then pay on the Saturday night at the observatory.

The observatory is located at: RMB 266B George Downs Drive, Bucketty, NSW.

I presume you have arranged transport/car pooling, if not and you need transport then please let me know ASAP as our district scout leader John Bradley who is also attending will have some seats available.

The details from the A1 form are:
Prices to visit Koolang are
$10 for children up to year 12
$15 for Adults
Pre-school children pay $10 if they use the telescope
Everyone is welcome to visit including parents and siblings
Please be at Koolang by 7.45 PM so we are ready to enter the Observatory at 8.00PM
The show starts at 8.30 PM and will conclude at 10.30 PM

Please note that it will take about 1 hour and 15 mins to drive to Koolang Observatory from Avoca

All scout members to wear full uniform and bring warm clothing for any outside activities at night

Directions to Koolang Observatory:
From the Central Coast - take the Peats Ridge exit off the Sydney-Newcastle Expressway at the Somersby Interchange (between Kariong and Ourimbah).
Follow the old Pacific Highway for 10 kms to Peats Ridge. Turn right onto George Downes Drive. 32 kms later you will arrive at Koolang Observatory. By car, it will take about 45 minutes to get from the Interchange to the Observatory.

Avoca scouts excel at the recent state rally!

For an absolutely mighty effort, for scouts who have never been to a state rally before and in fact Avoca has not been for years, overall out of 756 scouts and 150 patrols, you guys placed 17th in the state, sixth in the region and 1st in Gosford district. Absolutely remarkable guys! Salvatore, you were also the equal 17th patrol leader in the state, equal to one of those PLs from 1st Caringbah, who ultimately did take out 1st, 2nd and 3rd position.
So with experience and some hindsight, imagine what you younger guys could do next time!

Scouts this Thursday, not to be missed, it's fire!

Scouts are back at the hall this Thursday night the 25th Feb and this is definitely not a night to be missed, we will be making fire, Man vs. Wild style!

Yes, one for the pyros, making fire, but with a twist (really!), you will use no matches, lighters or accelerants of any kind, just natural materials which you will need to locate and bring with you beforehand.

If ever you are ever caught out in the bush with nothing, then this is a good survival technique that could get you warm, cook some tucker, keep the mozzies away and light a signal fire, knowledge worth knowing and could save your life!

Attached is a list of materials you will need to locate over the next few days to bring with you on Thursday evening. We will likely not have spares, so you will need to get these beforehand if you want to build the tool to light your own fire.

But in summary required is:
A small pocket knife, or knife capable of whittling off the end of a small stick.
Heavier, well dried sticks of about 300m long and 20mm thick which will be a source of ignition material, so, they need to be very dry and not green.
A less dried, greener and more flexible stick of about 400mm long and 15mm thick, which is capable of bending into a bow without snapping.
A length of braided cord about 1 metre long and 4mm thick, such as heavy boot lace or blind cord.
So you can apply pressure to a spinning stick with the palm of your hand, Dave suggests a strong sea shell (like a mussel shell) or perhaps even a steel bottle cap or soft drink cap may suffice.
Perhaps also bring a small amount of some dry tinder material such as dried long grass, coconut fiber or hessian that can easily ignite from a small spark.
That’s it, so get out collecting!

If you have some friends who might like to try out scouts, then invite them along as this will be a great activity for them to experience, but do let them know the list of materials to bring.

Lastly, not related to the fire making, but I would need to know who might be available and wishes to attend the overnight district camp at Kariong planned for the weekend of the 13/14th March.
So we can plan resources and equipment for this, I would need to have an idea of definite numbers of attendees this Thursday night, so if you could please discuss with your parents to determine availability if you wish to go and let your patrol leader know on Thursday, that would be great.

Founder's Day Sunday 21st Feb

This is our annual ceremony to celebrate our Founder, Baden-Powell.
There is a formal ceremony to start, flag raising etc. then activities will follow.
Most activities will suit the younger family members, cubs and younger scouts.
Swimming will be available later at the bush water hole, when supervision is made available.
There will be no swimming until leader supervision is present.

*** Due to the ceremonious nature of the occasion for all members attending please wear full uniform, properly please, no bright boardies or the like! ***

If swimming bring swimmers and towel. Full, enclosed footwear must be worn at all times (no thongs or bare feet!) I would recommend water shoes or old shoes for the swimming activity.

*** Slip, Slop, Slap, please bring a hat and wear sunscreen. ***

Bring a picnic lunch, all members of the family and friends, welcome and encouraged to attend!
Make a picnic of it, amongst the gum trees and have a wonderful day!
I do not believe there will be any food or drink available for purchase, so you will need to bring your own.

Scout Swimming Tonight Thursday 18th Feb

By PL request, we will be swimming this Thursday night at the Peninsula Leisure Centre, Woy Woy.
If you did not pick up the permission note at scouts last week (or lost it!) go to our website at http://www.avocascouts.com/calendar.html scroll down to the activity and click on the Permission Note link to open and print it.
Details of the activity are in this note, so please read it.
But please note the admission fees of:
Ages 5-16 $3.30 each.
Age >16 (adults) swimming $5.20 each.
All spectators, no swimming $2.40 each.
These are payable to the leisure centre on entry.
The time I have on the form is from 7-9pm, but we will have to be out of the pool by about 8.45pm as the centre closes at 9pm sharp.
All family and friends welcome and encouraged to attend, invite your mates along if they are at a loose end for a Thursday night!
You can of course swim earlier if you wish to, but you would need to be accompanied by parents as there will be no supervision from Avoca Beach scout leaders before 7pm.
There is also a small canteen there if you want to bring some spending money for a drink or whatever.

Avoca scouts,

In the past few weeks we have gone from hiking/camping overnight through the bush, to community service and now this week onto the environment! Whew that’s a lot in two weeks!

So this Thursday night to solve the question about what happens to all that stuff that goes into your yellow/green recycle bin, we are about to find out!

We have a special presentation at scouts on Thursday from the Thiess contractors about recycling on the Central Coast.

Now if possible, please, we need to be on time to start as close to 7pm as possible, as the presenters need to get started as soon as possible after that time. So, please be on time….

We also will have a scouts visiting from Bensville for the recycling, but once that finishes, it could make for a very interesting game of capture the flag (err, cats, Avoca style…).

For our visitors both from Thiess and Bensville, let’s please show them Avoca scouts are great hosts and that we really are scouts, so please wear your full uniform, including scarves, cords (show ‘em off!), sew on your badges and all other correct scout accoutrements…

Also we do have a presentation and special investiture (need that fire again…) to welcome another new scout to our troop, so again full uniform for that please, and it’s great to see we’re growing again, two new scouts in as many weeks, that’s fantastic! Please, let’s get more, invite your friends, scouting is only fun with lots of your mates!

Remember also toys for the Christmas boxes please and term fee payments are now due.

Scouts Go Totally Wild!

Scouts from South Australia's Mt Lofty Scout Group will appear
nationally in each episode of Totally Wild next week from 24-27 November
at 7:30 am on Channel Ten.

Every story in each episode will be 'introduced' by Scouts in uniform
which is a total of 18 introductions over the course of the week.
Each link is about 50 seconds - even though the Totally Wild! stories
are on other topics, the Scout introductions are there to each give
each episode a real "SCOUT" flavour.

The TV audience for the week is estimated to be 2.8m persons all in our
target demographic. The shows are also shown throughout SE Asia, NZ,
India and the Pacific.

Each episode will refer to a 'fun day at camp', including stories on
camping, camp cooking including the infamous kick the can ice cream
making, 'billy carting', fishing, Challenge Hill and more. The Scouts,
Cubs, Leaders and Parents involved have worked very hard, and if you do
see an episode(s) (that early in the morning!) - we hope that you will
agree that they have represented 'Scouting' with great pride and
enthusiasm.

Scout Activities for Next Term and Anzac Day

Dear Scouts,

Here is a quick update before we all take off on our holidays, so we can "be prepared" for next term!

Firstly, there is no scouts on tonight, Thursday 9th April, we finished the term last week with the ice blocking and BBQ.

Scouts will resume the first full week of the school term, so that's Thursday evening the 7th May at the hall.

We will have a meeting if possible on the Thursday beforehand with the Patrol Leaders (Phil and Tom) to map out the term program, but PLs only please, if available...

Now coming up in next term is an important event, the Region Rally. This is a great overnight, challenging, competitive camp and bushwalk and one for those up to it I would like to see some Avoca Scouts attend if possible. We haven't been for a year and the last patrol we sent in 2007 came real close (they did have a lot of fun though...) and would like to see an Avoca patrol make the the top twenty and get invited to the State rally this year, I reckon some of you guys could do it, you're good!

I can send you an application form for the Region Rally if interested and would like to see if we could form a patrol (or two!) to send, maximum of eight in each patrol. Note that with the term break, we will also need to send in applications as soon as we come back (possibly earlier, I'll confirm that), same week on the Friday, so this is the advance notice. I have sent out separate invitation letters to the Patrol Leaders so they know what's on.

Scouts, for the Region Rally you and your Patrol will be spending the weekend of the 23rd – 24th May hiking in the Wallaroo State Forest (North of Raymond Terrace, Newcastle), you will be relying on yourselves to find the bases, camping out in hike tents, cooking your own food and carrying everything with you that you and your Patrol needs for the week-end. It's self sufficiency, a bit tough, but a lot of fun camping and working together with hundreds of scouts from across the Hunter and Coastal region, many of whom you would have met at the Corroboree. At $12 camp fee for the weekend plus food, it's not an expensive activity...

It would be really good, if you could let me know soon by return email whether or not you may be attend this activity, so I can advise the numbers and start putting the patrols together. At this stage I do plan to attend as the troop leader.

Other things...

** Very Important** during the term holiday break we do have the Anzac Day dawn service at Terrigal memorial (next to the surf club) to which we have been personally invited in writing by the Terrigal-Wamberal RSL sub-branch, this is always a big event and one Avoca Scouts have always attended, it is early at 5.15am but very rewarding. FULL uniform please! This is a very moving and worthwhile service, to which you should also invite your family and friends to participate. At the end, breakfast at Maccas at Erina for all!

Also we have also been invited to participate in a memorial ceremony/service at The Palmdale Group's Greenway Park, Avoca Drive, Greenpoint where they need some people to raise the flag, (scouts are ideally chosen for this as we know how and we are really good community citizens...) this is at 11am, whether we do it or not will depend numbers I can get, it's optional but would be a nice gesture to do for the retired RSL folk and their families. This would be important if we could, as we will conduct the flag raising, but I do know people are also busy on Anzac Day.

Lastly, after a long Anzac Day, you're welcome to join me on Copacabana Beach for the last surf patrol of the season for fun and surf, as I will be on! Whew, what a day!

Sunday Flying Activity - Reminder

Here is some further information regarding the flying activities we are booked for this Sunday 7th December.

The final balance for payment is due on the day and must be collected before anyone can participate. Cubs are $53 (includes a model) and scouts, leaders, and other flyers are $49 in total. The amount payable on the Sunday is this less what you have already paid (deposit or full amount). Please bring the exact amount in cash for your balance payable on the Sunday as we will not have change.

The permission note previously provided, for all scout members who will be participating this MUST be completed, signed and brought along on the day. This is very important, if we have no signed parental consent form for all members under 18, you cannot fly, full stop. Parents please note if your cub or scout is car pooling with someone else then please make sure they have this note before they leave to avoid any disappointment.

For Security reasons full Scout uniform must be worn at all times as the course involves a lot of movement in and around the airport. If you do not wear this you will not be able to participate in some of the round the airport activiites. Non-members (parents/siblings/new-members) would need to accompany those groups in uniform only. For safety a high level of behaviour will be expected from all participants.

Please bring full packed lunch and morning/afternoon tea. Also bring all water and drinks. It can be quite hot out on the airport tarmac and you will dehydrate quickly, so please bring ample drinking water. There will only be limited/no facilities to purchase food or drinks, so best bring what you can. There are limited BBQ and picnic facilities available for those families that may wish to do that. Sunscreen and hats are essential, I would suggest bringing your scout hat/Avoca Beach cap as part of the uniform.

Cubs and scouts participating, please bring a notepad and pen.

Directions

Camden Airport may be reached by turning off expressway (M5) at the Narellan Rd Exit. Drive through Narellan, past golf course (on left) and turn right into Kirkham Lane (signposted to Airport), left into Macquarie Grove Rd, right into the airport. The Scout Centre buildings are last on the right before reaching the control tower. For us probably best go down the F3, take the M2 and then onto the M7. Allow about a 2 hour journey, although it may take a little less.

We must arrive by 8:30am sharp for all Air Activities.

I would strongly suggest car pooling to keep costs down.

Given the flight demand, movements etc. I would expect the day to end some time around 3-4pm.

Scouts Activity Update for Week 13th Nov - 16th Nov

Dear scouts,

Remember, NO scouts at the hall tonight, 13th November.

Activity is on this Saturday, 15th November for the walk to Pindar caves from Wondabyne station. It's about a 2 hour walk in and 2 hour walk out, plus breaks lunch etc.

Meet at Gosford station at 7.50am sharp. If you miss the train, tough, you've missed out, as not too many stop at Wondabyne!

Wear sensible hiking clothing, shoes and a hat. Bring comfortable day backpack with lunch, snacks, water etc. I would recommend at least 2 litres of water, more if you need more. Weather report is for showers, so wet weather gear, poncho etc. is essential.
Check your email for the permission note, you must bring it signed or cannot attend this activity. Email or ask me if you haven't got one.

We expect to be back at Gosford station at 4.10pm. Please arrange to be picked up.

Bring a compass if you one. I will also bring ours from the hall. Maps supplied.

There are plenty of good activities to be performed on this day in regards to compass work, map reading and use of a GPS all which counts towards your Scoutcraft and Pioneer campcraft badges.

Also on Sunday is the Gangshow information afternoon. If you wish to find out more out about Gangshow and try it out, then please go to the introductory session which will be held at East Gosford Scout Hall, 4pm-7pm on Sunday 16th November 2008. I would urge you all to attend, at least to see what its all about. It doesn't hurt to try. Wear uniform for this.

Avoca Cubs and Scouts (Leaders too!),

Now if you really want to join in on a fantastic activity where you can have a lot of fun and learn lots of drama skills, then I could not go past recommending the Gang Show crew. Of many of the worthwhile things you can get out of scouting, this is definitely one of them. I would certainly recommend you give consideration to being involved in this, it is definitely worthwhile. Please, I encourage you to do so.

If you wish to find out more and try it out, then an introductory session will be held at East Gosford Scout Hall, 4pm-7pm on Sunday 16th November 2008. I would urge you all to attend, at least to see what its all about. It doesn't hurt to try.

So for those of you that have not been to a past Gang Show performance and Avoca Beach always attends each year as a group, then read on.

Gang Show is an exciting and challenging activity for scouting youth members of all ages. It offers the opportunity to develop imagination within strict guidelines. It enhances leadership skills and particularly self confidence. Youth will develop better interpersonal relationships with people who are both considerably younger and considerably older than themselves. Young people who are naturally extroverts find an outlet for their talents, but the people who benefit most are the shy and introverted scouts who don't seem to have any particular skills.

Scouts Australia encourages the performing arts as part of its programming. Many Scouting members have received basic experience and moved onto bigger and better things by starring in a Gang Show. These shows give cast and crew vital confidence and experience in a variety of areas from acting and stage management to costume and set design.

“Melbourne Gang Show was a highlight for me as it gave me my thirst for performing,” says Shane Jacobson, star of the movie Kenny.

Writer, actor and comedian Dave O'Neil says: "Gang Show is where I got my first taste of showbiz!"

No don't be scared I encourage you to take up the challenge. Please go along on the Sunday (in uniform) to find out more, you have nothing to lose but plenty to gain!

We're Flying!

Avoca Beach Cubs and Scouts are scheduled to attend the Scout Air Activities Centre flying day and course on Sunday 7th December 2008.

Details are:

For cubs, the Cub Level 2 Badge day is designed to be run in conjunction with a normal Activity Flying day. The cost for the course is $53.00 (including GST) per Cub with a deposit of $5.00 per person payable within 6 weeks. This covers a flight in the Scout aircraft, a model aircraft, and use of the Centre. Leaders and family members need only pay for their flight ($49.00, including GST) if participating in this activity. Should you have members wishing to participate in the badge course but not wishing to fly then the cost is $15:00 we do not recommend this as most young people need to feel part of the overall activity and take part in the flying experience.

For scouts, The cost of the course is $49:00 per scout, which includes GST, with a deposit of $5:00 per scout payable within 5 weeks of booking. Leaders, family members and friends are welcome to participate in the flying part of this activity, the cost for this is the same as for the Scout Badge Course.

Scouts Hike to History

THE Leeton Scout troop has taken part in a hike to commemorate a piece of Australian aviation history.

On October 25, the troop completed a 17km hike in the rugged mountains of the northern parts of Kosciuszko National Park, commemorating the discovery of the wreckage of the Southern Cloud.

The disappearance of the airliner Southern Cloud on March 21, 1931 was Australia’s greatest air mystery.

The three-engined plane disappeared on a flight from Sydney to Melbourne and its wreck was not discovered until October 26, 1958.

Leaving Leeton on October 24, Scout leader Mark McDougal said 15 members of 1st Leeton Troop stayed at Base Cabramurra, the alpine facility of the Riverina Scouts located at Australia’s highest town.

After a Friday night hike and a good night’s sleep, the troop set off by car for the 25km trip to the vicinity of Round Mountain, where the hike commenced.

“We arrived at the wreck site and memorial, located at 1200metres, at 2pm and stayed for 20 minutes or so, contemplating Australia’s first air disaster that saw the loss of eight people, not found for nearly three decades,” Mr McDougal said.

“The photos of the cane and wicker passenger chairs of the cabin were particularly evocative.”

The Scout group chose the solitude of eve of the discovery anniversary to make the trek to avoid the commemorations that would take place the next day.

On the way back down, the group paused at the mountain hut of Bradley and O’Brien, a grazing hut built in the 1950s before the road between Cabramurra and Khancoban was built.

Travelling home on the Sunday, the Scouts stopped at the thermal pool at Yarrongobilly, which has become a firm favourite of the troops in any weather.

Clean Up taps scouts to boost awareness

Organisers of the Clean Up the World campaign are tapping into the scout movement's 28 million members in 120 countries to boost their global cause.

Clean Up the World, a community-based environmental program, mobilises an estimated 35 million volunteers annually.

The program had enjoyed a strong relationship with the scouts for many years, Australian chairman Ian Kiernan said on Monday as he announced a new global alliance between the two movements.

"We recognise that with 28 million scouts worldwide, that this is an incredible potential source of volunteers.

"We are looking at seeing how many scouts we can get involved in the 120 countries we're involved in.

"We've had 35 million people last year volunteer for clean up the world, and hopefully with this strengthened relationship with scouts globally, we may see those numbers increase quite dramatically."

Volunteer participation had allowed the organisation to expand into broader environmental issues, including the Clean up the Climate strategy, Mr Kiernan said.

"We are able to do this because of the strength that's delivered to us through the volunteers."

Scouts Australia Chief Commissioner John Ravenhall said protecting the environment was a key part of the movement's ethos.

"We've been pretty strong on Clean up Australia and now this is a wider opportunity," he said.

"But it also gives us the opportunity to be an example to other national scouting organisations around the world."

Participation in clean up-programs was all locally coordinated by individual scouting groups, Mr Ravenhall said.

"We're putting water tanks in every scout group or scout hall in Australia, that wishes to have a water tank, so that's another commitment to the environment."

The Parliamentary Secretary for Social Inclusion and the Voluntary Sector Ursula Stephens said the alliance was seen as an important step in fostering volunteer participation across the country and the world.

"Officially, 5.4 million Australians over the age of 18 volunteer," she said.

"That's around 34 per cent of the adult population and they give a total of about 713 million volunteer hours."

Supporting the alliance was an important part of the Rudd government's social inclusion agenda to encourage more volunteering, Senator Stephens said.

Anzac peace prize for Scouts

The ANZAC Peace Prize, announced annually, is awarded by the RSL to ‘recognise any outstanding effort by an Australian citizen who has promoted the concept of international understanding and who, in so doing, has made a contribution to world peace.’

The RSL Anzac Awards Committee awarded the 2008 Anzac Peace Prize to Scouts Australia. 2008 is the Year of the Scout and marks the centenary of Scouting in Australia. The award of the ANZAC Peace Prize recognises the part that Scouting has played in the development of two million Australians over the past 100 years, both as individuals and as citizens.

Dear scouts,

For those that came to our Darkinjung dreaming experience (I think most of you), I trust you had a good time, I did!

Although I am not so sure if I really can make a decent meal out of Termites, they didn't taste too bad though...

This week on the calendar is our International Night for this Thursday night (22nd May) at the hall.

Now for this you have a bit to do, after all we're scouts, we make an effort...

You must come and represent any country of your choosing, the only exception being Australia, we're all Australians after all.

You choose the country you like, it does not have to be based on your heritage, ethnicity or anything else, just one you like, interests you and can get information on, perhaps you have visited it before, which might make it easier.

For your country of choice, you must:

1. Dress in something appropriate or representative of that country. It does not have to be national dress or anything like that (although can be if you want..) but just something that is representative of, or worn in that country. But please do not dress in anything dereogative, poor taste or perhaps offensive to that country (wrapping yourself in bandages and saying you come from China is definitely not acceptable at this point in time! I think you get the idea...).

2. Obtain information in regards to that country, history, background, population, language, geography, sports etc. together with any other interesting facts, humorous or otherwise and be prepared to present it to the group. Hint, there's lots of stuff on the internet.

3. Be prepared to do a skit, sing a song, play music or entertain us in some way (follow on from our entertainment night...) in regards to some cultural aspect or otherwise of your country of choice.

4. Bring food to share that is representative of your country. A national dish, a taste of the country, something to eat. Please bring enough to eat that will contribute as a meal. We will sit down together to eat it as a meal, so bring enough for all to share. If you all make an effort, this is dinner.

5. Anything else you want to do for your country, remember, your country needs you!

OK again the rules are, all countries except Australia are acceptable. You must genuinely make an effort and satisfy all four topics above. Please, if you are not willing to make an effort and be prepared to have a bit of fun, then give this night a miss and do not come. Also do not come if you don't bother dressing appropriately for your country either.

The work above forms part of badgework for learning about international cultures, so bring your green books for marking off. Again, no effort, no sign off.

There will be a prize for the best effort made and you will be voting for it.

Note that cubs aged 10 or higher I will also be inviting so they can see what scouts do and do a bit of linking. You are also welcome and encouraged to bring friends along, again provided they follow the rules above and above all make an effort.

It will be a great night, if you want it to be, cya globe trotters!

Scouts offer a National Amateur Radio School

Get your amateur radio licence and badge!

Scouts Australia is offering a school in Amateur Radio for youth and adult members of Scouting.

The school will be conducted in Melbourne over 5 days during the September school holidays, and hopes to attract Scouts from around Australia.

The school is modeled on a successful activity conducted in Perth last January, at which three Scouts earned their Foundation Amateur Radio License. Scouts of all ages who hold an Amateur Radio license may wear a special insignia on the sleeve of their Scout Uniform.

The idea of the school is to bring together Scouts from far and wide to learn new skills. The School aims to give participants a wide range of practical experience and on-air time as well as gaining the knowledge needed to pass the
exam.

One example of the practical application of theory at the January School was where each participant calculated lengths, cut and constructed a half wave dipole for 10 metres, then tested and tuned it using two methods, using a Transmitter and SWR meter, and by using an Antenna Analyser.

The course is being hosted by the Scout Radio and Electronics Service Unit in Melbourne, the same team who brought us the amazing ARISS contact during the Australian Jamboree in January 2007.

We’ve something to look forward to from the team that took Amateur Radio to the Jamboree.

We’ll keep you informed as the detail of the school is finalized.

Darkinjung Dreaming and Bush Tracker Experience

G'day scouts and cubs,

Here's an update and further details on this weekends Dakinjung Dreaming activity.

Darkinjung Dreaming includes a walkabout through our natural bushland, discovering ancient Aboriginal engravings and paintings, mixing ochre into face paint and washing up with bush soap

Bush Tracker includes catching yabbies, learning how to track kangaroos and wallabies, trying out real bush tucker, learning how to get water from trees and hearing about how the Darkinjung people used bush medicine

Provisional Plan for the Day

(This may change according to conditions at the park)

13:00 Arrive at park, get organised, toilet break, quick lunch (self-catered).

13:30 Darkinjung Dreaming program begins

15:00 Short break: toilets etc.

15:15 Bush Tracker program begins

16:45 Program ends

17:00 Leave park

No food will be provided (other than that which you catch or find yourself!) so please have lunch beforehand. Drinks (hot and cold) and ice creams are available in the shop if required at cost.

Please ensure you do arrive by 1.00pm sharp (we won't wait!) so there is plenty of time before the start. You can see that it is a packed afternoon of activities.

Uniform optional, but please wear your Avoca scarf and sensible clothing suitable for walking around the bush in. I would suggest good shoes or boots and a sun hat. Also if the weather looks a little dicey bring rain gear. The activity goes ahead rain, hail or shine (well hopefully not too much hail...). Also bring a filled water bottle.

Overall cost is $15 per person, so if you have already paid the $10 deposit at the meetings last week, then please bring the balance of the $5 with you. Note that only those who have paid can attend the activity, the numbers are fixed. As this is an external activity, please bring your signed permission note with you. Additional copies will be provided on the day.

“Bush Experience” Weekend 17th/18th May

Cubs and scouts,

Avoca Beach Scouts have put together a fantastic weekend of bush oriented activities for you to enjoy and whether you want to do it all or just part, its completely up to you!

Firstly the Gosford District scouts have put on a fun day at the reptile park on Saturday 17^th May from 9am to closing. There is a big reduction in entry fees and activities for badge work. Note this is run by Gosford district not Avoca Beach, cubs and scouts from all across Gosford will be attending; information attached. Once you have finished with the reptiles, it’s onto camping…

Avoca Beach cubs, scouts and their families will be camping at the Camp Kariong scout camp (directions attached) over the weekend, which is in close proximity to all the activities. This is great scout camping, in a full bush environment, but with all amenities close by and a campfire! Camp fees for the weekend are only $3 for one day/night per person, BYO food and camp gear. Arrive anytime you like during Saturday, after 9am. Depart Sunday afternoon. We will have the group BBQ for a Saturday evening feast and also for a hot breakfast on Sunday if you desire. Please advise if you are not attending with one of your family members and also if you do not have your own gear and require anything. For a list of what to bring (other than your own camp gear) see our website under the Library tab in the document “Packlist for a Camp”.

Then on Sunday following lunch its the Darkinjung Dreaming experience, indigenous Australian bush lore and tucker at it’s best! The plan for this is:

Meet at the corner of Peats Ridge and Darkinjung Rd, Calga

3pm - 3.30pm Break ( bring your own drinks / food)

3.30pm - 5pm Bush Tracker Programme (face painting, bush tucker food, bush medicine, bush soap etc.)

Great activities for all ages, educational, bring your friends, bring your family!

If you intend to do the Darkinjung activity then we need to book now. Please bring $10 deposit for each person attending to the cub or scout meeting this week. Depending on the final numbers attending it is expected to cost no more than $15 per head in total for this activity. Note that any costs for the reptile park and camping are not required in advance, they are payable on the day.

For all members uniform is required for the Reptile park activity (see attached note), when arriving and leaving Camp Kariong (normal scout etiquette), but is optional for the Darkinjung activity on Sunday. Wear suitable clothing for walking in the bush for this.

So you choose how much or how little you wish to do, depending on your own weekend commitments, time and budget. Remember you can camp for just $3 plus food. There is no obligation or requirement to attend any or all of these activities, it’s up to you. But I am sure it will all be fun!

Anzac Day Dawn Service

Dear cubs, scouts, leaders and parents,

I trust you are enjoying your holidays, even it has been a bit wet...

This Friday is Anzac Day of which the dawn service and marches have always been well supported by the scout association.
Avoca Beach Scouts has also been invited to attend and support by the Terrigal Wamberal RSL Sub Branch. Additionally as this is the Australian Centenary of Scouting and Year of the Scout, special mention will be made at the service of scouting's support over the years. Also remembering those past and present scouting members who have served in the armed forces over the past 100 years and indeed for those many scouts who gave their lives so we can enjoy the freedom we do now.
I trust where possible our members will support this purpose.

For the dawn service we meet at the Terrigal Police station (behind the shops at Terrigal) at 5am (yes, it's early...) for the march to the Terrigal memorial, next to the surf club for the service. The march will start at 5.15am sharp.

We need a member of both the cub pack and scout troop to carry their respective flags. Also representative members to lay a wreath/flowers to remember those members, scouts, who made the ultimate sacrifice; their lives.
Please feel free to bring flowers, weaths and a card if you wish to dedicate to those former scouts.
Full uniform for all members please.

Following the service we will retire to McDonalds Erina for a well earned breakfast!

Matt Douglass, one of Avoca Beach's scouts, wanted to meet Sir Richard because he was in awe of the man and he wanted to promote the 100 years of Australian Scouting. Sir Richard Branson was once a scout too. He did, scouts never give in!

Sir Richard Branson is one of Britain's most successful businessmen. With a commercial empire spanning entertainment, travel, drinks, retail, insurance and telecommunications there are few sectors which have not escaped the attentions of his famous Virgin brand. In Australia the Virgin brand is in the form of Virgin Blue Airlines; and Virgin Mobile (phones).

Richard has spent his life challenging the status quo, innovating and striving for success. His parallel career as an adventurer has seen him enter the record books in hot air balloons, speed boats and more attempts are planned. Richard says about Scouting:

"Great fun, great adventures. Lots of outdoor activities which I love. Experience of leadership. Never could learn how to tie a knot though!"

No not scouts, (although we could do with a few more...), but parents.

As our current parent supporters group committee is now retiring, some members having served admirably for up to ten years, all committee positions now fall vacant and must be filled immediately if 1st Avoca Beach Scouts is to continue successfully. We ask for your support.

Our Group Committee is an essential part of the 1st Avoca Beach Scout Group. It is comprised of a group of caring parents that work to support the uniformed Leaders running the affairs of the group in practical ways like keeping the hall maintained, collecting fees, paying the bills, assisting with the organization of activities, social events and raising funds to meet the Group's ongoing expenses.

The Group Committee usually meets once a term for a one hour meeting where most of the business is conducted. It’s serious stuff keeping the wheels turnin’ and the lights-a–burn’n. The harsh reality is though our parent supporters can enjoy a pretty good social life just by being involved. Scouting is for children, but it is their parents as well as caring adults who give the youth scouting. All our Leaders and committee members have volunteered their time and talents to enable the scout program to be delivered to our youth members.

Our Annual General Meeting is scheduled to be held on the 2nd April and it is essential we fill the important committee positions of Chairman, Secretary, Treasurer, Hall Hirer and Fundraising/Job Week Co-ordinator by that date. There are also other roles available, but these are the important positions to be filled for our group to function. The work involved in these positions is not onerous and I can provide a full description of the roles and responsibilities together with all assistance and support needed.

If these important supporter roles are not filled for 2008, then our group would need to close as it cannot function without the input provided by these positions.

PS at any time we are also ALWAYS looking for leaders. A few new scout leaders at the moment would certainly not go astray. For the ultimate challenge and fun, be a leader!

Family Surf Camp – Weekend of 15th & 16th March

On the weekend of the 15th and 16th March 2008 is our family surf camp. This is a great opportunity for all families of cubs and scouts to get together, relax and have fun, on the beach!

All Avoca Beach cub and scout families, parents, children, relatives and friends are not only welcome to attend, but encouraged!

Please note that whilst we may conduct some activities like hiking or boating, supervision of the behaviour and care of all children will be, at all times, the sole responsibility of their parents or carers. Note that this camp site is immediately adjacent to an un-patrolled surf beach, which at times can be quite dangerous for swimming and surfing. All children should only enter the water with the approval of and supervision by their parent or carer. Leaders will not be supervising this weekend, they need a break and will be relaxing too!

The camp is held at the Glenrock Scout Centre located right on the beach in the Glenrock State Conservation Area, Off Burwood Road, Kahibah, Newcastle.

Camping is outdoors. There are no shops in camp, but it is in close driving proximity for milk, bread, ice and gas etc. to Dudley and Kahibah. Supermarket facilities are available in Charlestown (5km away). Town water supply is provided and there are male/female septic toilets, and hot showers. There is a weekend onsite duty warden. Camp activities in the Conservation Park include swimming, canoeing, beach fishing and excellent hiking on marked trails around the park on the Yeulerbah Walking Track, part of the Great North Walk.

You will need to BYO everything for outdoor camping and cooking. No facilities or resources will be provided by Avoca Beach Scouts, other than bringing the group BBQ. Please plan and bring everything your family will need. Open fires are permissible in the designated fireplaces, but would depend on any fire restrictions on the day. No pets/animals allowed, leave them at home (but not your scout!).

Camp fees are free for all Hunter and Coastal registered scout members (cubs, scouts & leaders – membership has its privileges!) $14.60 per person, per weekend for all others (no exceptions!) and will be collected on the Saturday afternoon, please bring the correct amount and change. This is the same as to whether you arrive Friday evening or Saturday. Arrival is anytime after 5.00pm Friday (please check in with Nicole at the warden’s house) and departure before 4.00pm on Sunday.

This is an official scout camp and regional training facility, there will be members from other groups and possibly the invited public too; we wish Avoca scouts to be an exemplary example of the scouting community. Poor behaviour or disregard of the camp rules will result in the offenders being asked to leave. Please advise your children of this. Full scout uniform should be worn by all members when arriving and leaving the camp; which is normal scout etiquette at all official scout camps.

Come along on the day and join in the Grand Parade at 1 pm, as well as experience FREE Scout activities at the Overflow. To be eligible, tickets must be purchased between February 18 and March 14, 2008.

The closing date to purchase the tickets is on the 14th March and we would need to have the money in on that date. So if you are interested and you wish to take advantage of this offer we would need to have the money into the group by the 12th March to allow time to send it in. Cub swimming Wednesday and Clean Up Australia Day Sunday

Dear Cubs and parents,

This Wednesday on our calendar is our swimming night.
We will be swimming at the Peninsula Leisure Centre, 243 Blackwall Road, Woy Woy from 7pm-8.30pm.
This is a lot of fun and also an opportunity for those who need to get swimming badges or achieve higher levels for those that already have them.
Double the fun, invite your friends!
Permission note for this activity is on the website, under the calendar tab for the date of this activity, please bring it with you on the night.

Cost for those swimming is $2.90 for those aged 5 - 9, ages 10 - 16 is $3.50 and above 16 is $4.80.
Non-swimmers/spectators is $2.20.

Also this Sunday is Clean Up Australia Day which is being conducted at the Avoca Scout Hall by the Lions Club from 9am - 11am.
Scouts, as both a community and an environmentally oriented organisation, are always keen to pitch and help. This is great a way for our kids to be involved in a community project. We hope to see you there. I believe that, depending on numbers, the Lions Club may be putting on a BBQ afterwards.

PL Activity at scouts tonight (21/2) is Canoeing !!

Dear scouts (and parents!),

The patrol leader's chosen activity for this Thursday night is, Canoeing!!
Please see the permission note for this activity on the Calendar under the date of this activity, please print and bring it!
Please note to bring clothing for swimming and don't forget those old, or water shoes. No water shoes, no canoeing... (also likewise with the permission note!).
Bring a towel and a spare change of dry clothes, I believe uniform is always dress suitable for any fine scout activity, but not mandatory for this night.
Mozzie repellent is a good idea too.
Note we are starting at 6.30pm and ending at 8.30pm to allow for good light for most of the activity. But this ends at 8.30pm sharp so please arrange to be picked up by then. Us scout leaders really enjoy scouting, but we also love to go home too, preferably early on some nights...
Note if weather is bad this activity is off, will send email accordingly and put a note on the News Blog on the website if it is off. Then the week's activity will still of course be the BP Bash, see below...

This weekend is also the annual BP (Baden Powell) birthday celebration, which this year being the centenary of scouting in Australia, is going to be a big "bash" event being held at Richley Picnic Area, Blackbutt Reserve, New Lambton, Newcastle. There's a flag parade at 9.00am and following that fun activities all day including flying fox, bungee, water slide, rope bridge etc. until 3.00pm. Best of all it's free! Bring a picnic, bring your family, bring your friends have lots of fun. But please come if you can, I don't want to be the only one holding Avoca's flag for the parade, that's what scouts are for... Definitely a full uniform activity this one, but you can bring a change of clothes for later if you wish.

Great time at the Slamboree!

We were the only group to go from Gosford District and about the largest single group attending across the whole Hunter and Coastal region as well!

Scouts Australia NSW is turning 100 this year and there are many exciting events and programs on offer that will offer all Members that opportunity.

1st Avoca Beach Scouts will be Celebrating “The Year of the Scout” and the Australian Centenary of Scouting. We will be incorporating many of the Centenary events into our program for this year so please make sure you join in.

This is a fantastic year to promote and celebrate Scouting in Australia, to engage your local community, demonstrating the value of Scouting to young people and adults.

Welcome to 2008 and what a big year it will be for scouts in Australia!
This year is the Centenary of scouts in Australia and the declared year of the scout.
Look where our flag is flying!

From New Year’s Day, the Scouts Australia flag is proudly flying from the western flag pole on top of the Harbour Bridge to mark 100 years of Australian Scouting.

To recognise the significance of this special Centenary year, NSW Premier Morris Lemma fully supported this initiative. The Australian Government has declared 2008 to be the ‘Year of the Scout’.

Grant De Fries, Chief Commissioner for Scouts Australia NSW, says that the opportunity to fly the Scout Flag from such an iconic location is a great way to start the many planned events throughout the year, such as the Australia Day Spectacular at Darling Harbour, and the 100 Good Turns Initiative.

“We have a lot to celebrate this year and our Centenary is a wonderful chance to share the benefits of Scouting with the young people and their families of NSW’, he said.

Get ready to share in the Centenary fun with a lot of great activities planned during the year. Now is a great time to be in or join scouts now. Come and join in the Centenary fun with 1st Avoca Beach Scouts now!

JOTA/JOTI - The World's largest Scout activity!

Centenary of Scouting 50th Jamboree On The Air / 11th Jamboree On The Internet 20-21st October 2007

Everyone in Scouts Australia can make friends, exchange experiences and cultures and have fun in the largest activity in World Scouting. JOTA and JOTI gives Youth Members the awareness that they belong to a Worldwide movement which has 26 million members.

Avoca Beach Scouts will be running an activity at the hall for all scouts and cubs from 2 - 7pm on Saturday and Sunday afternoon the 20th & 21st October for JOTI. All members, friends and visitors are welcome to attend and participate. We will have a number of PCs in operation for you to join in on JOTI and contact fellow cubs and scouts from all over the world. If you attend please wear your uniform as there will be opportunities to take some digital photos and exchange them with other scouts worldwide. Let’s show them who Avoca Beach Scouts are!

All members who participate can earn a great looking JOTA/JOTI badge to wear !

JOTI at Avoca Beach Scouts this weekend

This weekend (20/21st Oct) is the annual JOTI activity.
This year will be a special year for JOTA/JOTI, as with all scout activities this year it is of course the Centenary of scouting, but in addition it is the 50th anniversary of JOTA. More information on JOTA/JOTI can be found at:

Note scouts can do this activity at home themselves if they have a PC with internet access, details are in this link. In the past though scouts and cubs have had a lot of fun doing this together as a group activity. This activity is also being conducted by the Hunter & Coastal Region at Camp Kanangra, Nords Wharf.

Locally, with the kind sponsorship of the local Telstra Countrywide office Telstra will again be providing the Avoca Scout hall with Broadband access for the weekend. At this stage we would probably use a similar format as per the previous years. That is setup a dozen or so PCs with internet access for use of IRC chat on the Scoutlink channel, plus web access, email etc. We would also have a couple or more "high-end" PCs setup with multimedia/webcams for use on MSN for live video chat with scouts around the world.

Again, this weekend will be available to all Avoca Beach scouts and cubs, open to all scout groups across the Gosford district and you are all invited and encouraged to attend if you wish to. Depending on people's availability etc. we would probably start around the middle of the day on Saturday going through to Sunday afternoon. However given when people can attend amongst other activities and commitments on a weeekend, we will not necessarily be there for this whole time, so please, if you are planning on coming get back to me with a suggested time so I can be sure people will be there to conduct the activity and the Hall is open.

Given all our required hall upgrades are now complete we may also plan with the scouts a hall sleepover for the Saturday night, but this will up to the patrols as to whether or not they want to do this. We will at least have a BBQ on the Saturday evening and anyone is welcome to attend if they wish to.

I planned to have also a small display of scout memorabilia (some books, badges, uniforms) from around the world to add to the international theme of JOTA/JOTI. I have a collection of items which was used in the recent Gangshow which I will bring down to display.

Please pass this information on to your respective section leaders and if they are interested in attending please have them contact me to arrange suitable times to visit.

Total Lunar Eclipse - Evening of the 28th August

On Tuesday evening the 28th August a total eclipse of the moon will occur across all of Australia. Fortunately for east coast observers this will happen at a very convenient time early in the evening. The partial phases of the eclipse will begin at 6.51pm, totality will commence at 7.52pm with greatest eclipse at 8.37pm where the moon will be relatively high in the sky at 38º making observing easy. Totality will end at 9.22pm.

A Lunar Eclipse occurs when part or all of the Moon passes into the Earth's shadow. Lunar Eclipses (unlike Solar Eclipses) are completely safe to observe with the unfiltered and unaided eye - no special equipment is needed. The full moon will appear to go dark and turn a deep blood or coppery red.

Use of a telescope or binoculars can help improve the view, giving you more magnification and intensifying the colouration.

Sometimes a Total Lunar Eclipse is best viewed without any optical aid, just lying under the stars watching the change as the Moon first gets slightly darker and eaten away (partial phase), finally turning deep red as it enters totality.

Whilst you can watch this event (weather permitting) from any location where you have a clear view of the moon, Avoca Beach Scouts will have an eclipse viewing evening at their hall which all Gosford district scout members, their family, friends and public are welcome to attend and view jointly. Bring a friend! We will set up some telescopes for viewing to enhance the experience. We can also show you how to find south, identify constellations, whilst watching the eclipse up close! All of which can count towards achievement of your astronomy badge.

The Avoca Beach scout hall will be open from 7.30pm to 9.00pm during the lunar eclipse totality period. A light supper will also be available for a gold coin donation, and/or bring your own or something to share!

Note there will be no organised or supervised activities by Avoca leaders on this night, just casual observing, so all youth members attending would need to be supervised and accompanied by their parents and leaders. All members attending please wear your full uniform so we at least look like scouts. If you have your own telescopes and binoculars of any sort, please bring them to enhance your experience of this rare event!

Note this evening is weather dependent, if it is heavily overcast or raining it will be off. If in doubt call me at my number below. If you plan to have significant numbers attending please let me know so I can be prepared!

Even if you can’t come to our viewing night, go outside next Tuesday and take a look!

Centenary of Scouting – Sunrise Breakfast, Terrigal

Scouts Australia is proud to be celebrating the World Centenary of Scouting in 2007. To celebrate this special occasion all Scouts in New South Wales are being encouraged to attend Scouting Sunrise ceremonies to renew their Scout’s Promise. 28 million Scouts worldwide will be renewing their Scout’s promise in this fashion.

Avoca Beach Scouts, together with other scout groups from around our area, will jointly participate in a ceremony to be held at the Terrigal Skillion at sunrise on Sunday the 5th August; to celebrate the 100 years of scouting. This will be followed (weather permitting) by a BBQ breakfast below the Skillion in the Terrigal Haven.

As sunrise is at 6.45am we ask all past and present scouts (in uniform) to assemble at the Skillion at 6.30am. Please bring your pack, troop and patrol flags with you. Following the ceremony will be the BBQ breakfast for $2 per head. Please advise your leader if you will be attending so the breakfast can be catered for.

Avoca scouts, this is part of your Centenary 100 challenge, so if you can please be there. All Avoca members, past members, family and friends, this is a 1-in-100 year opportunity, so please make an effort to attend. Opportunity for participation by all !

Scouts Australia NSW is proud to be celebrating the World Centenary of Scouting in 2007. To celebrate this special occasion all Scouts in New South Wales are being encouraged to attend Scouting Sunrise ceremonies on Wednesday, 1 August 2007 to renew their Scout’s Promise. 28 million Scouts worldwide will be renewing their Scout’s promise at 8am on this day.

As you may be aware, the Scouts development programs for young people have a long and successful history here in Australia as well as in more than 150 other countries around the world. The worldwide membership is now 28 million making it the largest youth development organisation in the world. In Australia today 47,000 young people are involved in Scouting’s exciting leadership and community service programs supported by some 20,000 adult volunteers (both uniform and lay supporters).

Two major events are being held in Sydney on the morning of the 1st August at both the Opera House and Martin Place, as well as regional and local events.

Join with your 28 million fellow Scouts, worldwide, in renewing the Scout’s Promise!

There will be two venues, Opera House and Martin Place.

Assembly Point: All Scouts assembled on Western forecourt (near Drama Theatre), move the contingent to Northern Forecourt [which can accommodate 500 Scouts]. If numbers go beyond 500 the event will be moved to the front steps of the Opera House.Please ensure that all youth have adequate Leader or Parent Helper supervision during the event.

Kudu Horn will be blown by a Queen’s Scout from atop the northern sail.

It's winter but that doesn't keep Avoca Scouts indoors, we're out doing it in the cold, on ice. Whether on our bums sliding down hills on blocks of ice, or skating in style, Avoca scouts are making the best of the conditions and revelling in it !

A bit of cold weather doesn't stop our scouts. Of course at the end of August we are also off to the snow for a bit of skiing and boarding.

We're going to Gang Show !

On the evening of Friday the 13th July, the combined 1st Avoca Beach scout and cub group is planning to attend a performance of the 2007 Central Coast Gang Show. This is a great social activity for all members. Indeed the whole family and friends are most welcome too, it’s a great family night out !

What is Gang Show ?
Gang Show is a number of very clever theatrical performances performed by district scouts and guides. It’s fun for all ages, fast moving, a mixture of comedy and music, specially designed sets, stage lighting, sound effects and hundreds of costumes. Gang Show brings scouts and guides together, to participate in an exciting performance, in a professional venue, to an enthusiastic audience which often gets to participate and be involved in aspects of the performance. For the last two previous years we attended as a group and I’m sure that for those who went would agree it was a fun night.

1st Avoca Beach is planning to attend the Gang Show performance to be held on Friday evening the 13th July at 7.30pm at The Laycock Street Theatre in North Gosford. This is in the last week of the school holidays. We will attend as a Scout group in uniform and will be making a group booking. The performance runs for approximately 2 hours. To ensure seating as a group we need to make the booking and purchase tickets as soon as possible. Note that depending on seating availability the performance date may change. If you cannot attend on this night with our group, then the performance is also on other days, which you can still attend; but you would have to book independently. Transport is by self/car pooling. A permission note will be provided closer to the event. All payments to 1st Avoca Beach Scouts.

Scouts fulfil 10-year dream to conquer Everest

A group of Hampshire mountaineers have become the first ever Scout group to conquer Mount Everest. The five intrepid climbers put the cap on a decade of planning and fundraising for the once-in-a-lifetime expedition. Their historic climb of the world's highest peak was a perfect way of marking Scouting's centenary year.

Leader of the Sky High Climb team Nathan Figg, a 32 year-old satellite technician from Alton, said: "This has been the ultimate challenge in Scouting's 100th year. We've spent an amazing ten years to prepare for this immense challenge.

"It has been a lot of hard work and a great challenge and we are thrilled to have made it."

Team member Dave King, a 23-year-old marine engineer from Southampton, told how he had shed a tear of emotion as they reached the summit.

He said: "We have conquered one of the world's toughest challenges in Scouting's Centenary year and what a great way to mark the occasion.

"It's taken a lot of time and hard work to get out here but it has all been worth it."

A scout can do anything if they put their mind to it. From the scout promise: "I promise to do my best" and for cubs "scouts never give in to themselves". How true in this fantastic achievement !

Family Camp, this weekend !

Cubs, Scouts and families,

Just a reminder the family camp is on this weekend at Camp Kanangra, Nord's Wharf.
We would love to see you there, this is a not to be missed event !
If you didn't get the notes at the last meeting or lost them, I have attached copies here.
They are also on the website (www.avocascouts.com) if you need them.
Some families will be going up there on Friday night and anyone is welcome to do so.

If you are coming and you have a car with a towbar that is free, then Dave Temperley has a Hobie Cat, sailing catamaran available to bring up on a trailer; it just needs a car to pull it ! This would be a lot of fun on the lake to use, and this location will be ideal for it. The cubs and scouts would appreciate it. If you can help, please contact Dave or myself for more information.

Scouts at the Reptile Park, this Saturday

All Avoca Cubs and Scouts,

Now of course we would really love to see you at our family camp this weekend, even if only for one day if perhaps you can't stay overnight. But if you are unable to attend on the Saturday, then there is a Gosford district scout activity which you may also be interested in, Gosford District will (weather permitting) be at the Reptile Park from 10.00am, this Saturday 19th May. There will be many cubs and scouts attending a special scout open day there, where admission prices are at a significant discount from the normal. Information on that is attached. Please note that there will be NO leaders from Avoca in attendance at the Reptile Park activity, so supervsion will be up to yourselves. Information on this is in the picture.

Scouts go Totally Wild, on TV !

Please watch Totally Wild on Channel Ten at 4pm Tuesday 8 May until Tuesday 15 May (including 7.30am on Saturday 12 May) as Scouts at the Australian Jamboree (AJ2007) will feature. However, still check your local guides for screening times.

Let as many people as possible know about this fantastic exposure for Scouting. Totally Wild has been a strong supporter of Scouting in the past. They have done stories on subjects such as bush survival skills and billy cart races.

Prime Minister John Howard has just declared 2008 as the Year of the Scout in Australia.

" NEXT year, 2008, has been declared Year of the Scout to mark the centenary of Australia's scouting movement.

Prime Minister John Howard said Australia was one of the first countries in the world
to adopt scouting.

About 60,000 people were involved in the Australian scouting movement, while another two million had been part of the nation's largest youth development organisation over the past 100 years, Mr Howard said.

"The Government greatly values the contribution these young Australians make to their families, their communities and the entire nation," Mr Howard said.

"To commemorate this event and to recognise the contribution that scouting has made and will continue to make to Australia, I am also pleased to announce that the Australian Government has decided to designate 2008 as the Year of the Scout.

"In addition, the Royal Australian Mint will strike a circulating coin next year to commemorate this event."

Australia's scout halls also would share a government grant of $17.7 million to install rainwater tanks, Mr Howard said.

"This funding will assist the Scouts to generate significant water savings while at the same time providing a tangible and ongoing demonstration of actions we can all take to conserve our precious water resources," he said. "

Re the government grant for installation of rain water tanks, I have already submitted Avoca Beach Scouts application for this back in February, of which I have garnered support from Jim Lloyd, our local Federal member for this. So here's hoping...

It’s a great way of displaying our pride, giving exposure to the Scout Movement, and promoting World Scouting’s Centenary in 2007 and Australia’s Centenary in 2008. Guidelines restrict teams to legal and safe measures in their promotion of the logo or flag.

Scouts in Space

Scouts, here are some interesting facts about scouts who have been into space.

With a keen interest in space flight and as an ex-astronomer, I just couldn't help myself !

Of the 294 men and women selected to be astronauts since 1959 to 2005, more than 180 have been Scouts.

Baden-Powell wrote in the first volume of his autobiography about those “clear frosty nights under the dark, overhead vault with its stars big and brilliant, twinkling humorously and watching you”. He could not have imagined that just 35 years later we would be up amongst them, exploring outer space.

Astonishingly, 11 of the 12 men to have walked on the moon were Scouts. Even more remarkably perhaps, two thirds of all the astronauts ever to have gone into space were involved in Scouting. When NASA began its astronaut selection process, they were looking for people who were not only fit and technically proficient, but who had an even temperament and above all, a thirst for adventure. It was no coincidence that the majority of those who were handed “tickets to the moon” were former Scouts.

Despite the huge resources ploughed into the first manned space flights, the astronauts were still taking enormous risks. It was vital that those who spent days in the cramped conditions could keep calm under pressure and cope with being thousands of miles from Earth. Of course, many were former test pilots, but the confidence and initiative of the young men who had come from Scouting also impressed NASA.

One Giant Leap
Surely the most famous of all the “Space Scouts” was Neil Armstrong. Born in Ohio in the US on 5 August 1930, his interest in flight began early, when as a Scout he built and flew model planes. By the age of 16, he had earned his student’s pilot licence.

When Armstrong become the commander of the Apollo XI mission to the moon in 1969, he was to lead “Buzz” Aldrin and Michael Collins in one of the most daring exploits of the 20th century. On 20 July 1969, from the surface of the moon, Armstrong famously proclaimed: “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind”.

In 1971, Armstrong resigned from NASA and moved back to Ohio. As well as being honoured by his country, he also received the Boy Scouts of America’s highest honour: the Silver Buffalo Award. What’s more, Armstrong had carried the World Scout Badge with him on his historic mission.
There is a curious addition to Armstrong’s Scouting story. When 17 year old American Scout, Ken Dayton, was working towards his Space Exploration Badge, he was disappointed to learn that there were no certified adjudicators available to sign it off. Jokingly, his leader suggested he should ask an astronaut. Dayton drove 150 miles directly to Armstrong’s farm in Ohio and gave his presentation on the driveway. Armstrong’s testimony read: “I am not a certified instructor, however in my opinion; Ken has completed all requirements satisfactorily!”

As a side note, popular British sci-fi comedy of the 90’s Red Dwarf had a character that was a hologram called Arnold J Rimmer who was in the Space Scouts along with his brothers, Frank, John and Howard!

Scouts Australia Award Scheme
In line with the achievements of astronauts, Scouts Australia's award scheme encourages interest and participation in science, space and flying:

Cubs
Can cover the area of Scientific Discovery (The World Around Us) as part of the Boomerang Scheme.
Attain the Achievement Badges for: Space; Flight; Scientist.
Scouts
Achieve the Air Activities Badge for each of the Pioneer, Explorer and Adventurer Badges.
Achieve Proficiency Badges for: Astronomer; Science.
Venturer Scouts - Can participate in air activities.
Rovers - Can participate in air activities.

Did you know that as a Venturer or Rover (hopefully leaders too !) you can learn to fly through scouts ? You can, flying training is conduted at the Scout Air Activities Centre at Camden.

Avoca Scouts visited the Air Activities Centre back in December 2005. Scouts, must be time to go again soon, ask your leaders !

Lastly, Australian scouts have a special affinity with space through the new scout uniform, we're Trekkies !

Hmmm, Star Trek Voayger !
It would seem Scouts Australia was very clever in the design department (not..), right down to the section colours !
The designers must have been Trekkies (Star Trek fans).
Can't say I am a real fan of the new uniform though, scouts overall lost the "look" that everyone associated with scouting and sea scouts lost their distinguishing uniform which stood out from landlubber scouts (Avoca Beach Scouts are actually sea scouts you know). Also as unfortunately the new uniform has to be changed as a member progresses through each section, this adds to the cost of scouting, and I am definitely not a supporter of that, scouting should be affordable for everyone. Anyway that discussion for another day...

SCARF UP FOR SCOUTING DAY - Friday 27th April 2007

To celebrate the Centenary of Scouting and Scouts involvement in National Youth Week, all scouts are asked to wear their Scout Group Scarf over their school uniform on Friday, 27 April, 2007.

An icon of the Scout uniform, the scarf is worn rolled with a triangular piece at the back of the neck and is held by a clasp named a ‘woggle’ at the front. Originally the Scarf served practical purposes, such as covering the nose and mouth against dust, as an emergency handkerchief, a triangular bandage, an arm sling and as ties for a stretcher. Now, it is mainly used for differentiation as every Scout Group has its own distinct scarf colour and pattern.

Travel overseas for free with Scouts !

Wow, you can travel overseas as scouts and best of all it's for free !

OK only a few of our members may be eligible, but it certainly shows the opportunities that scouting opens up for it's members.

If you know of older scouts or Venturers that may be interested then please pass this onto them.

Kenya Scouts Association will be celebrating 100 years of Scouting since it was founded in 1907 by Lord Baden-Powell. Kenya is privileged to be the country where Baden-Powell came to live upon his retirement and was later buried. Over 30,000 international and local Scouts, and Scouter friends will converge in Nyeri the place where the spirit of Scouting lives to pay homage to the founder during the Centenary Jamboree.

Activities

Participants will have the opportunity to participate in a number of events including:

“Trees for Peace” – planting of 10 million trees
Scouting Sunrise on Mt Kenya
Eastern Africa Zone peace caravan
Visit major sites including PAXTU – BP’s house, Outspan and Treetops Hotel, BP grave and the memorial centre.
Scouts Australia is offering scholarships to two youth members aged between 15 and 17 years old and one adult leader.

To apply for the scholarships please submit, to the International Commissioner of Australia, a letter of expression outlining what the 100 years of Scouting means to you and why you should be selected to represent Scouts Australia together with your scouting resume outlining your scouting history and achievements. Anzac Day Dawn Service, Wednesday 25th April

Avoca Scouts and cubs will be attending the Anzac Day (Weds. 25th April) dawn service as an invitation from Terrigal Wamberal RSL sub-branch, to honour those that served for Australia and sacrificed their lives for the freedoms we now enjoy. We will march with our flags and participate in the wreath laying ceremony. This is a very moving experience and one definitely not to miss !

I do hope that as many of our youth members, leaders and supporters can attend as possible, please also invite your family and friends, it's worth it. Meet at the Terrigal police station in uniform at 5.00am (yes, it's that early..) ready for the march to the beachside memorial next to the surf club.

Following the dawn service we will be having a breakfast BBQ together and with some other scout groups also attending, at the Terrigal Haven. Bacon, eggs and orange juice will be provided. All are invited, members, family, relatives and friends for just $2.00 per head; now there's a great way to kick off the holiday morning ! However to cater I need to have an idea of the total numbers attending so I can ensure all will be fed. If you will be attending could you please let me know the number of people for breakfast by return email, phone or SMS no later than Sunday evening, next weekend the 22nd April. I will need to order some items in advance so will order based on the numbers received. Remember there is no limit to who wants to attend, as long as I know they are, otherwise you will be going hungry !

Even better, scouts will be cooking for us as part of the work towards their Centenary medallion.
Scouts, if you want to get that great medallion you really need to be at this event as the activity and duty here will count towards it...
